stopped the Navy from using flogging
as a punishment."
The cousin of a friend was on the
fund-raising committee for the Naval
Academy's Jewish center and chapel,
and Berry's decision to contribute led
to his invitation to the Nov. 2 event.
Members of the Jewish
Midshipmen's Club, distinct among
the crowd in their dark blue uniforms
and white caps, expressed their
enthusiasm over the chapel's opening.
"This is the first time we have had
a dedicated place of worship here,"
said club president Joshua Fischer,
21, of Phoenix, Ariz. "For me, it's
kind of breathtaking."
Eighty-five of the academy's more
than 100 Jewish midshipmen belong
to the club, which participates in
community projects, such as the
Annapolis Jewish Festival and, recent-
ly, a phone-a-thon in Baltimore for
the Jewish National Fund, Fischer
said.
The chapel, which will be connect-
ed. to the academy's existing chaplain-
cy center, Mitscher Hall, will cost
about $5 million. It will hold 350
worshippers and include a traditional
Sephardic bimah [ritual bath]. In
addition, it will feature a fellowship
hall and media
center as well as
conference
rooms for meet-
ings and other
events.
The Friends
of the Jewish
Chapel is fund-
ing the project's
construction,
while the Naval
Academy is con-
Harold Berry
tributing the
land as well as
paying for any adjustments that need
to be made to Mitscher Hill. The
remainder of the money raised for the
project will go toward programming
and events at the center in partner-
ship with the academy.
In his address at the chapel
groundbreaking, Mel Fisher said
Commodore Levy's legacy will live on
in the form of the new chapel, allow-
ing the academy's students to flourish
in their faith as well as their commit-
ment to their country.
"It's important," he told the
crowd, "for all of us to be able to take
care of our own people." ❑
