Goutkovitch and Mendelson met in 1987 when Goutkovitch, who grew up in Zikhron Yaacov, Israel, moved to Michigan after serving in the Israeli Army for 10 years. At the time, Mendelson, originally from Washington, D.C., was selling corn- puter equipment and soon asked Goutkovitch to join his company. The men's interest in Judaic prod- ucts started soon after their friendship, when they began collecting and selling books written and published in Israel. The books were to be sold here as a tool to help Israel. Their interest in Israeli products has continued and has become an emphasis in their new store. "We do what we can — they need help in Israel. They need jobs. Everything we can get from,Israel we will and we do," says Mendelson. •
