songs, Hebrew oldies and hits from the
likes of Fiddler on the Roof had the
crowd clapping and swaying for hours.
He played guitar and chalil (wooden
recorder) and accompanied his music
with light-hearted kibitzing and charis-
matic showmanship.
The 10th child of a Yemenite family,
Sharabi's strongest songs were the exotic
strains from his native culture. He
wowed the audience with a piece played
on two chalils at once, with melody on
one and harmony on the other.
Between numbers, he joked and told
stories of his Sephardic upbringing and
even swapped a Yemenite recipe.
Native Israeli Ariella Gal of Southfield
was in the audience grooving to
Sharabi's Middle-Eastern beat.
"He's Yemenite like me," she said.
"His music comes from the neshamah
[soul]."

Kresch of Farmington Hills, smiling at
his wife, Lin. "It's like re-experiencing
