D IAMONDS & F IN E JEWELRY
Michigan's most trusted jeweler since 1977
etroit's Orthodox community
always welcomes a night out
where both the food and the
entertainment are completely
kosher.
So, on Nov. 15, more than 300
turned out to sip cappuccino, socialize
and revel in the music of Yoel Sharabi at
PTACH's third annual Cafe Night.
Sharabi, a popular Israeli folk singer,
captivated his audience at Young Israel
of Oak Park with a wide repertoire of
songs in Hebrew, English, Yiddish,
Ladino and Spanish.
"We've been trying to get him for the
last three years," said Fern Herschfus,
P'TACH board member and Cafe Night
program chair.
The Cafe Night is a popular event for
P'TACH, an international organization
that provides special tutoring for yeshiv-
ah students with learning disabilities.
Hebrew for "open," P'TACH is also an
acronym for "Parents for Torah for All
Children." The Detroit chapter, founded
in 1979, offers tutoring in both secular
and religious subjects and maintains
resource rooms at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah,
Yeshivas Darchei Torah and Yeshivat
Akiva in Southfield and Beth Jacob
School for Girls in Oak Park.
Parents pay for P'TACH tutoring over
and above regular yeshivah tuition.
Nonetheless, their tuition covers only 20
percent of the cost of the organization's
budget. Remaining funding is derived
from find-raisers, such as the Cafe
Night.
"P'TACH really works," parent Vicky
Waxenberg said while enjoying the
evening. "It helps children mainstream
into their classes; it helps them socially
and academically — it helps them func-
tion. I'm happy to be here to support
such a worthwhile organization."
