T

he works of Eric Clapton
are not on the curriculum
at the Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit. But
if you show up any Wednesday around
noon, you are likely to hear a soulful
rendition of "The Sunshine of Your
Love" wafting from the high school's
multi-purpose room.
"Music is a great release for all," says
Mitch Master, fine and performing
arts director at the 135-student school.
Along with Rabbis Baruch Lazewnik

and Aaron Bergman, Master plays
back-up guitar at the lunchtime jam
session. Between six and 12 students
show up every week for an hour of
requests — mostly favorites from the
'705 and '80s.
JAMD director of music Dan Greig,
who organized the informal sessions,
will be starting a choir at JAMD in
February. Also in February, the school
will present its first-ever rock concert
— with talent from the Wednesday
jam sessions.
