YAD holds at least one social activity
per month. But under the direction of
Bernhardt, 31, an attorney who is the
youngest member of the federation
board and a member of the young lead-
ership cabinet, YAD has recruited young
leaders and partnered with Jewish agen-
cies.
'Ann Arbor is a city where communi-
ty service is a big part of people's lives,"
Bernhardt said.
For the first time, YAD is joining
forces with Ann Arbor's Jewish Family
Services to organize a spring fun run,
proceeds of which may be used to cover
the cost of adoptions.
Last March, YAD recruited nine peo-
ple for the United Jewish Communities

Young Leadership Conference in
Pittsburgh. None of the Ann Arborites
knew each other before, but after five
hours each way on the bus and two days
at the conference, "you know each other
pretty well after that," Bernhardt said.
"It's very invigorating to meet people
from all over the country who care
about the same things you do. Everyone
who went became much more
involved."
"There are very few places that you
can go in the world where as a Jew
you're in the majority," Bernhardt said.
"But we have these YAD events where
everyone is Jewish and everyone is there
to meet people and you're with people
with the same values and beliefs and
it's nice." ❑
