T

he fresh faces and voices of
the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah
boy's choir captivated the
crowd at the Marriott
Renaissance Center hotel Nov. 16 as
more than 2,400 people filled the grand
ballroom for the Southfield-based
Yeshiva's annual dinner.
Some of the country's top leaders
and the community's biggest support-
ers gathered in downtown Detroit to
celebrate the Jewish day school's 89th
anniversary. This year's dinner drew
the largest crowd in the event's history.
The evening's keynote speaker was
U.S. Senator and former First Lady
Hillary Rodham Clinton. Also in atten-
dance were U.S. Senators Carl Levin -
and Debbie Stabenow, Congressmen
Joe Knollenberg and Sander Levin, and
Governor Jennifer Granholm, who
impressed the crowd by reciting the
prayer "O'seh Shalom" in Hebrew.
Dr. Terry and Meryl Podolsky were
this- year's Golden Torah honorees.

to the Yeshiva as a child," said Daniel
Monkman, ; whose family has made a .
tradition of attending the event. "He--4.-
passed away in 1997, and we come
every year in his memory."
A VIP reception, held before the
dinner, gave major donors; a: photo
opportunity with Senator Clinton.
People who were there said there was
only enough time for a quick hand-
shake and a snap shot when they got
to the front of the line. Scott
Kaufman of Huntington Woods corn-
pared the experience to seeing a rock
star walk into aroom. "When she .
arrived, everyone immediately rushed
forward to see her," he said. Ili
