house in Livonia with his family.
The reverend was extremely eager
for me to explain many things that he
experienced during the service. He
was also eager to tell me — and I to
hear — of his recent trip to Israel
with a large group of Christian clerics
who, joined by rabbis and imams,
walked through the various sections of
the Old City in Jerusalem, all the way
to the Temple Mount. There were
more beautiful presents and cordial
Japanese-style bows for everyone who
came to our table.
So what was the uneasiness I felt on
the way home? It must have been that
2,000 years of discrimination and
hatred against our people, not because
of what we did but because of who we
were, had left a scar of suspicion of a
hidden agenda somewhere. And if
these lovely women indeed wish to try
to convert me and my friends, bring
them on!

JCC MusicFest
To Boost Arts

We were thrilled to read your editorial
of Nov. 7 titled "The Energy Of The
Arts" (page 37) and wholeheartedly
agree with you.
Your comments about the importance
of connecting to the arts encouraged us
to respond with the news of the cultural
festival that the Jewish Community
Center is currently developing.
We are pleased to announce that the
first "MusicFest: A Celebration of Our
Jewish Heritage" is scheduled for June
20-24. Musicfest will bring the best of
the Jewish music world to Detroit
annually.
The mission of Musicfest is to "high-
light the musical heritage of the Jewish
people through a variety of programs
that educate and entertain our commu-
nity, while encouraging affiliation with
the JCC."
From rock to Klezmer, children's to
choral, classical, hip hop, world,
Sephardic, folk and jazz, Musicfest will
feature all styles of music and include
lectures and workshops, too. We
encourage everyone to take part. Help
us build this festival.

Police Not Liable
In Killing Of Man

New York/JTA — A court in New
York found that police officers are not
liable for the 1999 shooting of a men-
tally ill Jewish man in Brooklyn.
A jury agreed with the city's argu-
ment in a civil trial that Gidone
Busch lunged at the police with a
hammer, and that the officers had no
choice but to react.
Busch's father disagreed. "They're all
murderers," Howard Boskey yelled in
the courtroom after the verdict.
Gidone Busch's mother, Doris Boskey,
said the case would be pursued.

German Firm Back In
On Shoah Memorial

Berlin/JTA — In a reversal, the com-
pany linked to supplying Zyklon B to
Nazi Germany camps will take part in
building Germany's Holocaust memo-
rial.
The panel overseeing the construc-
tion of the site decided to allow
Degussa to continue working on
Berlin's memorial, Wolfgang Thierse,
the president of Germany's parliament
said Nov. 13.
The country's Jewish community
reportedly opposed the decision.

Reform Backs Gay
Marriage Ruling

New York/JTA — The Reform move-
ment's policy arm lauded a ruling
declaring unconstitutional
Massachusetts' ban on same-sex mar-
riage.
The decision by the Massachusetts
Supreme Court is a "landmark step
toward ensuring the right of gay and
lesbian Americans to share in the joys,
and privileges, of marriage afforded
heterosexual Americans," the
Religious Action Center of Reform
Judaism said in a statement.
But Nathan Diament, of the
Orthodox Union's Institute for Public
Affairs, said the ruling "calls into
question the consensus in the country
on the traditional institution of mar-
riage."
David Zweibel of Agudath Israel of
America said the decision "marks a
sad turning point in the moral history
of our nation."
