By the middle of the ride, it was
clear that Wheels of Love was a com-
bination of perspiration, dedication
and inspiration. Our legs ached from
the uphill climbs, our hands were
tired from braking on the long, steep
descents and our hearts were full of
admiration for the courage of the chil-
dren at Alyn Hospital, which has
become the primary rehabilitation
center for children who have sustained
injuries incurred from acts of terror.
There was blood, there was sweat
and there were tears (there was also
Bill Graham's broken collar bone) and
through it all, we always felt proud to
be the ambassadors of the Detroit
Jewish community. Our supporters
definitely got their money's worth.
Team Alex included returning riders
Graham of West Bloomfield and
Howard Tzvi Sherizen of Oak Park,
and first-timers Dorothy and Eddy
Barak of West Bloomfield, Dr. Robert
Levine of Farmington Hills and
myself, of Farmington Hills. To date,

we've raised about $35,000.
For the riders, the payoff came on
the last day of the ride. For some, the
steep ascent up to Jerusalem was gru-
eling. For others, it was a party on
wheels.
"Hearing teens singing on their
bikes behind me on the final climb
into Jerusalem made me laugh and cry
at the same time," said Dr. Levine,
"and I had to stop just to catch my
breath."
At 2:30 in the afternoon on
Thursday, Nov. 6, 158 riders rolled
through the gate of Alyn Hospital
together. The group, all dressed in
bright yellow Wheels of Love jerseys
and carrying yellow helium balloons,
was a sight to behold. We were greet-
ed by some of the children who had
been on our minds and yours since we
first asked for your support in the
form of cards, letters and financial
contributions.
We were also welcomed by Rabbi
Jay Karzen, who greeted the riders
with a warm blessing and the tradi-
tional offering of bread, salt and
wine. When the celebration was
over, we were left exhausted and
exhilarated and enthusiastic about
continuing our commitment to
Israel and to the children of Alyn.
