radiation oncology and his wife, a
radiation physicist, to spend two
years learning the techniques at U-
M. The couple returned to Israel and
were able to use the training to take
care of patients, and then the pro-
gram was developed to give others
the opportunity.
The program, which has been
funded through private donations
and department funds, needs both a
long-term endowment of $2 million
and annual funding of $100,000 to
support the Israeli fellows as they go
through the training, Dr. Lawrence
said.
"There are only between six and
eight really well-trained radiation
oncologists in all of Israel," he said.
"If we could just train another 10 or
15 radiation oncologists ... it could
change the whole quality of practice
of radiation oncology in Israel."
The Soifer family became involved
with the fellowship program during
Howard Soifer's illness, when he was
under the care of Dr. Lawrence.
"The radiation oncology program
at the University of Michigan
Medical Center helped sustain
Howard's life a great deal longer
than was originally expected," said
his wife, Sandy Soifer of East
Lansing. They gave us hope when
there really was not hope, and
because they helped us, we discov-
ered the Israel fellowship program
and wanted to give something back.
So even while Howard was alive we
started to help raise money for the
program.
"I think the most significant thing
is that my daughter Marci has
embraced this cause which was so
important to her dad and to me,"
she said. "Although I always knew I
would devote a lot of effort to this
cause, I never dreamt my children
NA, ould be doing so much for it as
well." L
