Shin Bet Chief
Criticizes Tactics

Jerusalem/JTA — A former head of
Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency
criticized aspects of Israel's war on
terrorism.
Avraham Shalom told Israel's
Channel Two Television that while he
supports Israel's need to arrest terror-
ists, "there's no reason to make people
strip at a checkpoint and there's no
reason to stop an ambulance carrying
a pregnant woman . about to give
birth."
He also criticized Israel's policy of
targeted killings, saying covert opera-
tions better suit Israel's needs and
would avoid bad public relations.
Shalom was one of four former
Shin Bet chiefs who announced over
the weekend that the government's
inability to advance peace talks with
the Palestinians was leading Israel
toward catastrophe.

Bush Presses Both
Israel, Palestinians

President Bush criti-
cized both Israel and the Palestinians
during a speech at the beginning of
his state visit to Britain.
In a wide-ranging address to
defense and foreign policy experts at
London's Banqueting House, Bush
said that while "the long-suffering
Palestinian people deserve true lead-
ers" who did not misuse funds or
consort with terrorist groups, Israel
had a responsibility to "stop hum

Bush Speaks Out
On Anti-Semitism

London/JTA — Leaders in Europe
and other lands need to strongly
combat anti-Semitism, President
Bush said.
"Europe's leaders and all leaders
should strongly oppose anti-
Semitism, which poisons public
debates over the future of the Middle
East," Bush said in a speech to British
defense and foreign policy experts,
just days after suicide bombers killed
24 people in attacks on two Istanbul
synagogues.
The Orthodox Union praised Bush
for the call. "We pray that European
leaders will heed President Bush's
call," said the O.U.'s executive vice
president, Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb.

Synagogue Bombers
Are Identified

Istanbul/JTA — DNA tests identified
the two Turks who perpetrated twin
synagogue bombings in Istanbul,
Turkish officials said.
Mesut Cabuk, 29, and Gokhan
Elaltuntas, 22, carried out the
attacks, which killed 24 people,
including the bombers, and wounded
hundreds. A radical Turkish group
has claimed responsibility for the
attacks, but Turkish officials say the
bombings were too sophisticated to
have been carried out solely by a
homegrown group.

LARRY ARONOFF

Jerusalem/JTA — An ancient Jewish
village recently was unearthed on the
outskirts of Jerusalem.
Some of the walls of the nearly
2,000-year-old village, discovered by
archaeologists, were still intact. The
village is estimated to have been built
around 60-70 C.E. and abandoned
70 years later during the Bar-Kochba
Revolt.
The village, located near the
entrance to the present-day Shuafat
refugee camp, was discovered during
infrastructure work on Jerusalem's
light-rail system.

ing" the Palestinians, put a freeze on
settlement construction and disman-
tle illegal settlement outposts.
He also called on Arab states to
end anti-Israel incitqment, cut off
funding to terrorists and establish
normal relations with the Jewish
state. A day earlier, a senior official
told reporters that the administration
is discussing with Israel how to
improve Palestinian living conditions.
