To Life, In Israel

Yet if settlements continue to
grow and we are committed to
democracy, we have no convincing
response to offer.,
It is not our task to say what a
final peace agreement should look
like. But there will be no final
agreement if settlement growth .
does not stop. There are those who
say that terror must end first and
that it is too early to consider such
a step.
This situation is far more com-
plex. It is not too early; in fact, it is
very nearly too late. With each
passing day, a two-state solution
becomes more difficult and the
likelihood of a single-state solution
increases.
Not all settlers are.extremists. But
their leaders are trying to impose
an endless war on Israel and the
Jewish people.

"Not all settlers are
extremists. But their
leaders are trying to
impose an endless war
on Israel and the
Jewish people."

—Rabbi Yoffie

For these zealots, their right to
live anywhere in the historic Land
of Israel takes precedence over
Israel's democracy and, indeed, over
her very existence. But I do not
believe now, and I have never
believed, that they speak for the
Israeli majority.
We know that Israel did not
choose to fight this dreadful war.
We, too, yearn for peace. We mar-
vel at the strength and determina-
tion of the Israeli people. With
their children on the front lines,
they have refused to cower in their
homes or give in to terror.
The heroism of Israelis continues
to inspire us. The Reform move-
ment has been, and will always be,
champions of the Zionist cause.
But every Jew must consider the
very real dangers that the settle-
ments pose.
Surely the Jewish people did not
dream of Zion for 2,000 years in
order to be a minority in somebody
else's state. 0

Jerusalem
'm ironing my son's Israel army
uniform. There is to be a cere-
mony. I pray
for him to be
safe, with a mixture
of pride and fear.
Doron made
aliyah four years ago
and is in the reserves
of this army protect-
ing Jews. We didn't

the Holocaust. How
blessed we are to be
here at this moment
in time when there is a Jewish state.
As a mother, I grieve at seeing the
young men and women prepared to
defend it.
The ironing board is set up in a
tiny kosher kitchen in Israel. I fill the
steam iron with water, which is pre-
cious here. Any leftover from the
teapot, when cooled, will water
plants on the tiny balcony.
As I press the olive green shirt, I
see the living room. By the way, the
apartment is 500 square feet of liv-
ing, loving space. I see a couch,
books (many of which are filled with
prayers), a rocking chair (nine days
ago a baby, Neshama, was born) and
a long folding table that opens for
Shabbat.
There also are a small TV ( rarely
-
turned on), a CD player and a
"horse." This horse is an eight-foot-
wide wire stand which takes up one-
third of the living room and is usual-
ly laden with the day's laundry.
Doron and Sarah live on the first
floor, 34 steps up.
I am so happy in this modest
apartment, nurtured by the love
between husband and wife and child
that permeates every inch of space. I
am revered and respected here. It
comes from Torah.
I am finished pressing the uniform
now. I have no idea that, in a few
hours, I will be at the Israeli
"Pentagon" in Tel Aviv. There, I will
be honored as Ruti Yaron, a brigadier
general, asks me to attach my son's
captain's bars to his uniform.
Afterwards, we will be served
honey cake and wine, and toast
L'Chayim.
It is a very rich life here in Israel.
Rich in love, warmth and brother-
hood. 0
