brother of the late Dr. Albert

HERBERT LEON ROSS, 77 of
Florida, died Nov. 1, 2003. He is fond-
ly remembered as "Herbie the ice
cream man" for those who were chil-
dren in northwest Detroit in the 1950s.
Mr. Ross is survived by his chil-
dren, Stephen Ross, Helen Ross,
Eileen Rattet; their children and sib-
lings, Florence Keyes, Teddy Ross
and Helen Pliskow.
Interment in Florida.

BARUCH RUDYAN, 73, died in
Israel Sept. 11, 2003. He was born
in Cape Town, South Africa.
As a young teenager, he became an
ardent Zionist in Hashomer Hatzair
and started plans to make aliyah. In
1952, left South Africa for Israel and
settled in kibbutz
Barkai, where he
became a very impor-
tant member,
involved in every
aspect of the commu-
nity and eventually
serving at least three
Rudyan
terms as general sec-
retary.
On the Kibbutz, he met Yona
(Delphine Weisner), formerly from
Detroit, who had made aliyah the
same year as he; in 1957, they were
married.
Because of his ability to communi-
cate and connect with people so easi-
ly, he was sent as a shaliach (emissary)
from Hashomer Hatzair to countries
all over the world for recruitment
purposes. Baruch, Yona and their
growing family spent years in South
Africa and in California, as shalichim:
speaking, attending summer camps
and recruiting volunteers to come to
Israel to work on kibbutzim. Once
the volunteers arrived in Israel, he
became their surrogate parent, mak-
ing sure they had places to stay and
were treated correctly. He stayed in
touch with many of those volunteers
and became their personal friends.
Although he spent many years in
the Israeli army, he never wanted to
go to officers' training school. He
was made a commander of army vol-
