Sat. 4pm- I I pm • Sun. 3pm-9pm And since it opened in May, Sugar Kisses has quickly become a fixture in the neighborhood. People stop by even when the bakery isn't open. "If we're here, they just tap on the win- dow to see if we have anything at all, even just a coffee," says Lisa. "Most of our customers prefer not to eat wheat or have wheat allergies. And we hit on a community — the vegetarian and vegan community — that is very tightly knit." "Word of mouth has been wonder- ful," says Brian. Also, says Lisa, 'A lot of people who come in here have celiac-sprew. [People with this disease cannot tol- erate gluten, which is found in many grains.] It gives them peace of mind to know there is no wheat in the building. I make special orders in off-time so there is no cross-contam- ination from the spelt, either." In fact, Sugar Kisses' pastries were the centerpiece of a going-away party held in August for an employ- ee at Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield. Both the departing worker and Rabbi Michael Moskowitz have the condition. Temple staff ordered a chocolate cake and other treats for the party so that the guest of honor and the rabbi could partake. The Hacks have also begun doing some wholesaling to small establish- ments in the area, like Xhedos Cafe in Ferndale. When asked about Sugar Kisses' pastries, the first thing out of owner Caleb Grayson's mouth was: "The brownies, man!" Grayson carries four Sugar Kisses' items in his cafe: two vegan and two regular. "We've been going through this stuff faster than anything we've ever carried." Brian grew up in Huntington Woods and graduated from Berkley High School. He attended Central Michigan and Wayne State universi- ties. His parents are Cheryl and Bruce Hack. Lisa grew up in Rochester, graduat- ed from Rochester High School and has a degree from the Center for Creative Studies in photography. Her parents are Ray and Alice Turkawski. Lisa is not Jewish, but she is learn- ing about Judaism and they may join the Birmingham Temple. The cou- ple's Sept. 21 wedding was per- formed by Miriam Jerris in Brian's parents' backyard. So, what future plans do the new- lyweds have for their small-but- growing business? "She's got the nice little shop and I've got the five-year plan," says Brian. "I'd eventually like to make some money." Lisa smiles and shakes her head. "I think people are missing the neigh- borhood bakery," she says. "We try to use the highest quality ingredi- ents, which are expensive. But we want to keep our prices reasonable. It shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to eat healthy." ❑ . Sugar Kisses, 1025 S.
