paintings. I loved doing that.
"For Receiving Hospital, I did
murals for the psychiatric ward. I
planned paintings that would be
peaceful and did landscapes with
water, trees and shrubs."
Group shows also have been impor-
tant in Simon's career, and she has
been included in many exhibits
planned by the Michigan Water Color
Society, Artists' Market, Scarab Club
and Michigan Art Train.
'After my husband died, I traveled
to a different country every year, and
did paintings of outdoor scenes in
those countries," Simon explains. "I
was in Israel twice and did some of my
work in Haifa."
Simon's artistic interests have been
picked up by two of her three daugh-
ters. While Deborah Hecht is an area
ceramist, Betsy Summer is an interior
designer based in Washington, D.C.
Miriam Hecht took a different direc-
tion and has worked as an urban plan-
ner in Portland, Ore.
The artist, now married to retired
attorney Erwin Simon, has balanced
her artistic projects with activities
planned for her blended family and
volunteer projects in the Jewish
community.
A member of Temple Beth El, she
has been a reader for groups of chil-
dren assigned by Hadassah and the
National Council of Jewish Women.
Deborah Hecht's friendship with
Marcy Heller Fisher led to the Fisher:
Simon collaboration on the Pewabic
book. Knowing of Simon's painting
talents, Fisher invited Simon to do the
illustrations.
"Marjorie worked very quickly on this
project," Fisher says. "I'm very pleased
with the results. I really want people to
realize how many beautiful artistic treas-
ures we have in this area, and the illus-
trations help point that out."
Simon recalled - artwork she did for a
children's book on nutrition as she
completed the Pewabic project. The
recent book illustrations inspired
to do a new series of still lifes for her
second exhibit at the Huntington
Woods Library.

Fired Magic and More, an exhibit of paintings and book illustrations by
Marjorie Hecht Simon, is on view through Nov. 26 at the Woods Gallery
on the lower level of the .Huntington Woods Library, 26415 Scotia.
