The Michigan State University senior considers her nomination for a Rhodes Scholarship to be a con- tinuation of that childhood passion for education. She is one of five MSU nominees to be considered for the scholarship and the chance to study at Oxford University. Schiller, daughter of Andrew and Barbara Schiller, is a 2000 graduate of West Bloomfield High School. She has a dual major in Schiller engineering arts and psychology and is a member of the MSU Honors College. "I am very excited about the nom- ination," Schiller said. Her senior thesis work at MSU involves researching the selective visual attention processes of the brain by modeling the Stroop Effect, based on the interaction of an automatic process — reading — with a conscious process — color naming. "My ultimate goal is to use these research skills in the automotive industry, helping develop technolo- gies that would allow physically challenged automobile users and others greater accessibility and mobility." Schiller has been active in a num- ber of MSU organizations and activ- ities, including serving as executive board member of the MSU Society of Women Engineers and treasurer of the Council of Jewish Students Organization. She plays viola in the MSU Campus Orchestra. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Academic Achievement Award from the College of Engineering and the Granger Scholarship in Engineering. She was an intern with Ford Motor Company.
