"We all know the power of AIPAC
[American Israel Public Affairs
Committee] and other elements of the
Jewish community," said attorney Ken
Knoppow, urging the audience to pro-
vide a counterbalance by helping him
to organize a local chapter of the Jewish
Alliance for Justice and Peace. There are
30 chapters nationwide, including in
Ann Arbor.
Jeff Ram of Huntington Woods
describes himself as "sort of in the left-
wing despair camp." Having heard a
number of speakers one-sidedly criticize
Israeli policies in recent weeks, he was
pleased that Freedman "came at this
topic with a sincerely sympathetic view-
point of what Israelis are going
through.
Steve Golden of Oak Park found it
hard not to take issue with Freedman.
He was visibly agitated during her talk,
and interrupted several times.
'All of the Jews want peace, but we've
wanted peace for 100 years and they've
been fighting us for 100 years. The
lefties, the self-hating Jews, have to give
their own people trouble," he said,
accusing Freedman of "throwing mud."
"You have to protect your own peo-
ple first, then worry about everyone
else. We haven't seen one Arab in 22
nations saying that Israel needs a state,
but we say the Palestinians do," said
Golden. "The peace movement was
through, but they've started interfering
again."
Said Sara Schiff of Huntington
Woods, "I don't know that we can trust
the Sharon government or trust the
Palestinians to abide by their agree-
ments. But what choice do we have
besides living together and working for
freedom and equality on both sides?" ❑
