violinist who spent his early years in
Michigan and has returned for per-
formances with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra, adds his tal-
ents to the Milken recordings.
Working with the Berlin Radio
Orchestra, he conducted Joseph
Achron's Violin Concerto with Elmar
Oliveira on violin and Stefan Wolpe's
Man from Midian.
"These pieces represent very different
phases of Jewish music," Silverstein
says. "The concerto uses a cantorial
theme, and I think it will find its way
into the standard repertoire. Wolpe's
piece is extraordinarily complex and
has the quality of art music."
As the recordings are released, they
will be available in music stores and
on the Web. The dissemination of
the music is being encouraged with
concerts and events to help generate
awareness and appreciation.
"I think this total collection of
recordings has been a magnificent
effort," Silverstein says. "Neil Levin
researched the total spectrum of
Jewish music and helped produce a
treasury for years to come." El
