Opera performers in Ann Arbor
helped with four scenes from pro-
ductions with Jewish themes.
"I was in Ann Arbor in 2001 when
these scenes with the University of
Michigan Opera Orchestra were
recorded," Levin says.
The operas include David Amran's
The Final Ingredient, which is set at a
Passover seder in a concentration
camp; Paul Schoenfield's The
Merchant and the Pauper, which
refers to a Chasidic parable about
riches and spirituality; David Schiff's
Gimpel the Fool, which is based on a
Yiddish story by Isaac Bashevis
Singer; and Abraham Ellstein's The
Golem, which retells a Jewish legend.

rediscovering music."

Attempts were made to record many
works in culturally and historically
appropriate locales. For example,
recording sessions in Berlin took
place at the Jesus Christus Kirche,
the center of the German resistance
during World War II. Among the
works recorded there was Kurt
Weill's The Eternal Road.
"Many of these recordings are
firsts," Levin says. "We were able to
reproduce certain pieces with historical
accuracy and musical level higher than
had been done in past performances."
