SURREALISM vs. IMPRESSIONISM

CHANIPAGNE RECEPTION FOR THE ARTISTS

FERGO AND SULJAKOV

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH, 6-9 P.NI. • SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH, 12-4 P.M.

I really enjoyed the cover story by
Special Writer Esther Allweis Tschirhart
("Party Loyalists," Oct. 10, page 64). I
didn't know that there was a Russian
social scene and was fascinated to read
about it. The article was so enticingly
written that being young, single and
Russian sounded exciting and enviable!

hat started as a plan to fix a roof
leak on the Koppy family's home in
Bloomfield Township, evolved into a
complete exterior renovation of their
1960s era French colonial.

"It's totally different," said David Koppy,
who shares the 3,600-square-foot home
with wife Elissa, children, Adam and
Falynn, and dog. Shayna. We feel like
were living in a brand new home."

Armed with a custom set of architectural
plans, Gittleman transformed the entire
elevation. adding lodge-style cultured
stone, preserving and redeploying
existing brick, extending the porch and
reconfiguring the garage roofline.

Throughout the project, the Koppys'
daily,routine was never disrupted — a
critical point considering that David and
Elissa run a home-based computer
consulting company.

The work went so well, in fact, David recommended the company for his sister's home renovation.
So, if you're looking for a simple correction. or a dramatic home makeover, Gittleman has
the answers.
Just ask the Koppys.

Call today. and discover how easily Gittleman can convert your house into your dream home.

In the movie The Godfather Part II,
when Al Pacino's wife asked for a
divorce and the children, he replied,
"With all of my power, do you think I
would let you take my children?"
In the same line of thought, America,
the strongest country in the world, is
spending billions of dollars on arma-
ments and sits back and is watching our
young men being killed in Iraq. These
lives should not be used as pawns. They
are precious and must do everything in
our power to preserve them.
Under Saddam Hussein, everybody
understood the rules and they all
behaved themselves or else. Americans,
on the other hand, are trying to play
cricket. The comfort zone for Iraq was
to live in terror.
With all of its power, America shows
weakness. We're not willing to do what
it takes to fight terror with terror. If you
want to stop the killing of our young
men, you have to fight on their level.
Remember, we killed 175,000 inno-
cent lives in Japan in order to end
World War II. This ultimately saved a
lot of American lives.

Fight To Prevent
More Pogroms

Regarding "Remembering Babi Yar"
(Oct. 17, page 39) and the murder of
Kiev's Jewish population — believe me,
I am not trying to diminish the gravity
of the Nazi Germany occupation. But

more must be said.
This was not the first wholesale killing
of the Jewish population in Russia. My
maternal grandfather, Zayde Aaron
Epstein, and his second wife, Esther (my
mother's stepmother), residents of a

lage in White Russia, a town that the
Germans wiped off the face of the earth,
were also murdered in a wholesale
killing,_in exactly the same way. That
was in 1939. --
Yes, the Germans murdered innocent
civilians, and the former Soviet Union
rounded up all of the children who were
old enough to take care of themselves
and shipped them off to camps east of
the Volga River. The parents were left to
be killed by the Germans.
My mother has _three stepbrothers,
offspring of my zayde's second marriage.
The Soviets came and took them from
their mother and father as they did with
countless other children. Those children
were raised as atheists. The two older
brothers served in the Red Army in
World War II, both surviving. The
youngest, after induction into the army,
was shot by his commanding officer for
being a Jew. He survived the attempted
murder, but became handicapped.
After World War II ended, my moth-
er tracked down her three half-brothers.
They were living in Moscow.
Many letters later, she got a letter
from her eldest sibling asking her not to
write anymore. The KBG was opening
all of her letters, reading them, blacking
out anything they didn't like and then
hand delivering them to her stepbroth-
ers' houses. It made them fear for their
and their families' lives.
The Russian government today is
being run by the same gang of anti-
Semites as during the Soviet era. We
must get our brothers and sisters out of
Russia before the pogroms begin again.
