"Keeping the old houses adds character to the neighborhood," says Glieberman. "These houses, some more than 3,000 square feet, were originally luxurious, so we restored them back to what they were and added garages. We also built new townhouses and lofts. We're obligat- ed to rehab six to eight more units." The value of these houses, he says, is that they're attracting young peo- ple to move back to the city. "They want a city life," Glieberman says. "Woodward Place proved to us that if you put high-quality housing in downtown Detroit, people will buy it. There's a demand and a need for good-quality housing downtown. Many moved out because they didn't have these choices before." Award winner Rev. Holley is nationally known for his unique economic development efforts in the African-American community, says Robert Hunt, deputy planning director for Wayne County and a member of the Woodward Awards committee. Rev. Holley is also chair- person of the Woodward Heritage OrganizationfWayne. While the location of Rev. Holley's church is in the poorest ZIP code in the city, under his leadership, the church and its Community Development Corporation (CDC) have spawned a range of economic entities. They have the largest African-American food distribution operation in the metro area and have formed a charter school, Hunt says. This year, CDC completed a six- store mini-mall on Woodward, north of Grand Boulevard. The project economically benefits the church and young people in the community, who are trained to work in the stores. Said Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano at an August ceremo- ny designating Woodward a national scenic byway, "The benefit of a thriving, dynamic Woodward will be felt throughout the region and state as we begin to generate pride among visitors and our own residents."
