Q :

My' 5-year old son has a classmate who has been
diagnosed with leukemia. The teacher has explained a
little about the disease, the course of treatment and
that the boy may miss some school, but will try to
maintain a complete schedule. My son is asking a lot
of questions. Any advice would be most appreciated.

My guess is your son is wondering, "Can this
happen to me?" I assume he's just started school and
needed a physical. Assure him that his doctor felt he
was completely healthy,. Also, find out what type of
leukemia the classmate has. Most pediatric cases are
treatable. It will help your son to know that, although
treatment can be difficult, the boy most likely will
lead a normal life when the treatment is over.
