" Innovator In Physical Medicine SHARON LUCKERMAN Staff Writer IV ith 13 other doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Dr. Max Karl Newman of Bloomfield Hills established the field of physiatry (physical medicine and rehabilitation). His patients have included presidents -- from U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to UAW President Walter P. Reuther (whom he helped rehabilitate after the labor leader was shot in 1948). Fifty years ago, Dr. Newman, a victim of polio, founded the Detroit Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, now in Southfield, and has directed it ever since. He also established the first Michigan clinic for children with muscu lar dystrophy. A healer, innovator and teacher, Dr. Newman, 94, died Oct. 22, 2003, after suffering a stroke. His interest in physical medicine and his dogged determination stemmed from a childhood bout with polio that left him with a limp. "He never considered himself handicapped and never took advantage of it — or wanted to be taken advantage of," said son Dr. Steven Newman of Bloomfield Hills. Though as a boy, the future doctor was unable to chase after other kids who made fun of him, he was toughened by the experience and was not afraid to fight back. In the eighth grade, he had to transfer schools when he refused to apologize for a fight. 10/31 2003 110 Bloomfield Hills, took over the clinic in 1979.
