BROOKDALE THE HERITAGE • .. of SOUTHFIELD U.S. Says 9-11, Pearl Death Linked New York/JTA — The alleged master- mind of the Sept. 11 attacks is believed to be the murderer of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who American authorities now believe is behind both incidents, is in U.S. cus- tody. Pearl, the Journal's South Asia bureau chief, was kidnapped last year in Pakistan. His captors forced him to admit his Jewishness on videotape before slitting his throat and decapitat- ing him. In a related development, a Hollywood studio reportedly has paid a "high six-figure sum" for rights to the memoirs of Pearl's widow, Mariane. `Sesame Street Opens In Mideast Jerusalem/JTA — A new string of "Sesame Street" episodes is airing in Israel, the Palestinian areas and Jordan. The 26 episodes, which teach toler- ance and coexistence, are being pro- duced with money from the European Union, the Ford Foundation and other sources. The new episodes were broadcast in Israel in September. Arabic versions will be aired in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Jordan at the end of October. The new shows are different from the Palestinian-Israeli version that was produced in 1998. Now on sale at over 100 newstands Canada Establishes Holocaust Day Montreal/JTA — Jewish officials are applaudifig the Canadian government for establishing a national Holocaust Remembrance Day. `At a time when anti-Semitic inci- dents seem to be on the rise world- wide, Canada's action today stands as a symbol of leadership against that dark- ness," Bernie Farber, a Canadian Jewish Congress official, said this week. "As a child of Holocaust survivors, I am sure I speak for many in com- mending all the parties for this right- eous and honorable initiative," he said.
