These resulted in the creation of municipal cemeteries instead of burials on family-owned land. A "suitable" container was required, so workers would not have to touch a person who died inexplicably. This was the beginning of the casket business as we know it today. Cemeteries still require that "suitable" container. . During World War II, she was a Red Cross volunteer at Harper Hospital, a volunteer with the National Council of Jewish Women, where she managed the re-sale shop; and she was a vol unteer in the Neo-Natal Care Unit at Children's Hospital, where she organized rummage Weiss sales. Mrs. Weiss is survived by her husband of 61 years, Harold Weiss; daughters, Susan Weiss of Ontario, Joan Weiss of Washington; son and daughters-in-law, David Weiss and Penny Hergenroeder of Bloomfield Hills, Samuel and Jo Weiss of Birmingham; daughters-in-law, Joan Lovell and Janet Tooley; grandchildren, Polly Tooley and Cory McCall, Kili and Herbert Drayton, Willie, Mac, Dewey and Cody Weiss; great-granddaughter, Alexis Dole; sisters, Sylvia Markel, Freda Doroff, Ede Mender, Gwen Halperin; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Edward and Shirley Gluklick, Morris and Faye Weiss and Elizabeth Weiss.
