T
here is French dressing,
Italian dressing, Russian
dressing and Greek dress-
ing. Up until now, there
has been no Jewish dressing," said
Todd Levitt, president of Levitt Foods
in Novi.
Todd came up with the idea to cre-
ate Levitt Jewish Dressing after years
of using the line as part of a stand-up
comedy routine and teasing restaurant
waitstaff by asking for "Jewish dress-
ing" when he ordered a meal. Finally,
he decided to do something about it
and created a dressing using a celery
seed-based recipe his grandparents had
served at the family owned Pine River
Hotel in Charlevoix in the 1940s.
A tenacious young attorney, Todd
used his picture in a Paul
Newmanesque fashion on the dress-
ing's bottle. He believes his picture
makes the bottle more friendly on
store shelves.
The dressing, consisting of honey,
mustard and celery seeds, is certified
kosher parve by the Orthodox Union.
The dressing's sweet flavor and thick
consistency reminds me a bit of the
old Hudson's poppy seed dressing. I'm
not sure what makes this dressing
Jewish (or for that matter what makes
Russian dressing Russian, French,
French, etc.), but the dressing would
make a fine dip for crudites or a terrif-
ic glaze for chicken.
As for salad dressing, we found it
overpowering for simple greens, but a
nice complement to an Asian mix of
waterchestnuts and chow mein noo-
dles. A low-calorie version of the
dressing will be introduced at the end
of the year.
Levitt's Jewish Dressing is available at
Hiller's Markets, Nino Salvaggio's,
Westborn Markets, Market Basket,
Market Square and other locations.
