"SPREE!
IS FREE!

"Our Jewish community is one of the
gems of the Detroit area," says Gale. "I
value the diversity of worship, cultural
and educational opportunities that we
have. There are always opportunities to
teach and to learn. It is a pleasure and a
privilege to work in the Jewish commu-
nity:,

And his work continues to be chal-
lenging. "We need to better tap into and
utilize the passions of our volunteers,"
he says.
He looks to help build and strengthen
the Israel committees at local syna-
gogues, using the successful models
from the movement for Soviet Jewry.
And while he believes local media has
improved over the last several years, he
realizes "the media can never do the job
we would want them to, so reaching
people through other mediums is very
important. Israel has the moral impera-
tive in the struggle and we need to
explain the historical context. But we
need to explain the humanity of the
Israelis by continuing to bring real peo-
ple to tell their stories and connect to
Detroiters.”
This doesn't surprise Gad-Harf.
'After all these years, Allan is always
looking for ways to become a more
effective professional, to reach another
audience or to bring the story of Israel
to others in a more compelling fashion,"
he said. "He's never been out for him-
self; he wants our organization and
community to flourish."
