with the report denigrated the funding
arrangements as "goulash. Everything
goes into the pot, everything goes out of
the pot. No one knows what is what —
not Ford, not any of them," he said.
A senior LAW executive added:
"What do you expect? I know of one
grant for $200,000 made from the
European Commission with nothing
more than a phone call."
As of this writing, Ford was still sched-
uled to continue its funding of LAW
through 2005, according to LAW and
Ford sources. ❑

polling data showing support for Israel is
two to four times as high as support for
the Arabs. "We have now gone to the big
PR firms in New York since they told us
they could help us. But I have to tell you,
I haven't seen any real difference during
this time."
Ram said that reports of Jews
demonstrating against Israel at Ann
Arbor synagogues during Rosh
Hashanah were "chutzpadik" and "just
unbelievable" as are activities of the
group "Not In My Name" comprised
of Jews that oppose Israel. Noting that
such activities are well-received in the
non-Jewish community, he counseled,
We need to be more proactive outside
of the Jewish community."
What is the most important thing you
can do for Israel right now according to
Ram? Visit. "The support and solidarity
you show by coming to Israel now is so
important. It speaks volumes," he said.
Sheldon Klimist of Farmington Hills,
who says he is not a supporter of the
Sharon government, called Ram's talk "a
very careful speech." Not wishing to criti-
cize a guest, he_ said Ram "did the best he
could under the circumstances."
Ram's talk was informative and
"honest and above board," agreed
Mason and Anne Hin-ielhoch of
Southfield. "I feel we are going to
have to go back to the 1967 borders,"
she said. "It's not easy to live there."
She recalled the nine weeks they spent
in Israel last year visiting their daugh-
ter. "It will take time for things to
improve, just as he said. It won't hap-
pen this year, or the next, but it is
coming." 1
