ROBERTA SCHWARTZ, 67, of Bloomfield Hills, died Oct. 9, 2003. Mrs. Schwartz was a volunteer who ran the gift shop at North Oakland Medical Center in Pontiac for 12 years, generating nearly $45,000 a year for the hospital. In all, she volunteered for more than 29,000 hours in 29 years. Last year, she was honored with the hospital foun- dation's Rainbow of Hope Award at the annual gala. She was also a member of Tam Schwartz O'Shanter Country Club. Mrs. Schwartz suffered with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, for the past five years. Rabbi Harold Loss of Temple Israel, who spoke at her funeral, said, "For all of us, Roberta is an inspira- tion, in both the way she chose to live her life to serve the community, and in the conclusion of life, in how she con- fronted and dealt with illness. "Recognizing that her time was lim- ited, she continued to serve and stay involved until physically it was impos- sible. Her physical body began to fail, but her mind and her view of the world never changed." Mrs. Schwartz is survived by her husband of 46 years, Lloyd Schwartz; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Steve Ivanyi; son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Debra Schwartz of West Bloomfield; mother, Shirley Schooler of Oak Park; brothers and sisters-in- law, Richard and Sally Schooler of New Jersey, Roy and Brenda Schooler of Oak Park; sister-in-law and brother- in-law, Lillian and Ted Magiera.
