The travel itinerary, set by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, will include educational programs and social activities designed to engage more than 200 young people from metro Detroit from June 30 to Aug. 2. The teen mission is open to students entering grades 10-12 in fall 2004 or graduating in 2004. . The mission is a partnership between area congregations, the Jewish Federation and community families. It was cancelled in 2002 because of the turmoil in the Mideast. The trip provides experiences for young adults to learn and explore the land and history of Israel and the Jewish people. "An Israel experience for our teenagers is the single greatest learning experience possible," said Nancy Schostak, committee chair. "We have sent our own children on teen trips to Israel, and their experience created a lasting memory that they continue to reflect upon today." The Jewish Federation has received a Challenge Fund gift from Sam and Jean Frankel toward the 2004 Teen Mission. The gift will be used to raise money to supplement the mission cost. Federation also will subsidize the trip. The per-student price is $3,995. The mission will include 31 days of travel through Israel. A teen steering committee will help identify participants and assist in planning the itinerary. Some 30 teens from Detroit's Partnership 2000 Region in the Central Galilee will meet mission members in March in Detroit and reunite with them on the mission. The trip itinerary has been planned to assure safe experiences for all partic- ipants, Schostak said. Students will be supervised by a staff of adults, includ- ing participating community rabbis.
