n Sept. 16, 750 patrons filled Congregation Shaarey
Zedek's Southfield sanctuary to support the Greater
Detroit Chapter of Hadassah and hear John Stossel
of ABC News' 20/20.
Hadassah President Sue Luria introduced honorary
chair and past president Melba Winer, whose affiliation
with the organization has spanned 71 years. Winer spoke
about Hadassah "being color blind, nationality blind.
We help everyone!"
Spotted in the crowd were Dulcie Rosenfeld, Audrey
Koloff, Marjory Levin, Cele Singer, Mona Shane, Betty
Chemoff and Ida Rosenblum.
A brief film introduced the Hadassah Medical Organization,
whose Jerusalem hospital is Israel's national trauma center,

treating 40,000 people annually.
Stossel, who has won 19 Emmy awards, spoke on "Freedom
and its Enemies." He recounted his upbringing, thinking his
parents were German Protestant and discovering, at age 12,
they were Jewish.
Stossel talked about the frustrations of television censorship
and government regulations, and how the government and
lawyers — whose job is to protect consumers — sometimes
do more damage.
Citing the lengths that manufacturers now have to go to
protect themselves, he noted that stepladders have 41 warn-
ings. "We've made America fearful of the innovation that
made America great." ❑
