Gruber explains that sometimes con-
gregations used non-Jewish architects
because they believed the synagogue
membership could have stronger influ-
ence on the designs. Jewish architects,
they thought, might come to projects
with developed ideas of what these
buildings ought to be.
"I think that people should look close-
ly at their physical environment wherev-
er they are," Gruber advises. "When
they're in synagogues, they should think
how they influence the space and the
space influences them.
"I hope people traveling the country
will add some of these spaces to their
itinerary." ❑

ADAM NISKAR WAS PARALYZED IN A DIVING ACCIDENT ON AUG. 1, 1999

At that time. his family and friends established the "FRIENDS FOR ADAM" trust. This trust was
established to raise money for Adam's ongoing medical needs. Although he has made tremendous
strides both mentally and physically, Adam still has additional financial needs due to the accident.
The past money raised has afforded him reliable home care, exercise equipment. an accessible
home and a modified car. All of which make Adam the independent person that he is today. He has
a tremendous outlook on life and truly is an inspiration to others with special needs. This trust will
