Best Bets ONE PERFORMANCE ONLY When Vadirn Gluzman performed the Tchaikovsky violin concerto with the Detroit Symphony last January, review- er Lawrence B. Johnson compared him to the late virtuoso Isaac Stern. "Gluzman possesses Stern's rare pas- sion, his physical strength and his elec- tri4ing propensity for altering rhythms and phrases," said Johnson in his Detroit New review. All of which added up to a Tchaikovsky of unflagging- brilliance and memorable originality." The 30-year-old Israeli violinist will solo again with the DSO during the 2005-06 season. But local audi- ences don't have to wait - Gluzman will present a single Detroit-area recital Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Christ Church Cranbrook. The Ukrainian-born violinist and his wife, pianist Angela Yoffe, open this year's Cranbrook Music Guild series with a concert of works for violin and piano, by Mozart, Prokofiev, Bartok and Ravel, along with two compositions by young Jewish pianist and composer Lera Auerbach. In April, Gluzman and Yoffe gave several of Auerbach's violin works their first recorded performance on the BIS label. The duo studied together at the Juilliard School in New York. He became an Israeli citizen in 1990; she made aliyah in 1991. They are expecting their first child in February. - Diana Lieberman Vadim Gluzman performs in recital with Angela Yoffe 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Christ Church Cranbrook, Lone Pine and Cranbrook roads. $30.
