This Sukkot, make a
pledge to spend next
Sukkot* in Israel.

*Or Chanukah, or Purim, or Pesach, or
Shavuot, or your winter vacation, or
your spring vacation, or your
summer vacation.

would talk about with you that they
never do?
• Imagine that you are your teacher.
As a teacher, what would you say
about yourself (the child) when I
meet with you for parent-teacher
conferences?
Now, place the questions under
each plate. Before anyone gets
dessert, he must ans
wer his question.

#9) Don't Leave This Way: Sukkot
comes in the fall,
and leaves are
everywhere: atop
the sukkah as
skakch, on the
ground when you
go for an afternoon
walk, or still on the
trees as you watch

their amazing col-
ors. But what kind
of leaves are they?
Visit your
favorite library and
check out a book
on trees to learn
just what kind are
in your neighborhood.

#10) Drink It Up: Children love to
cook; parents don't love to clean it
up. If you have a budding Nigella or
Mario in your kitchen, challenge her
or him to come up with an original
Sukkot beverage — which has to
reflect something in Judaism. (Yes, it
will still be a mess to clean up, but
probably not as bad as some of your
children's other food cooking proj-
ects).
Here are some ideas:

• Orange juice (also known as
Orange Jews)
• Honey
• Milk (Israel is, of course, the land
of milk and honey)
• Soda (Because God is "soda-pend-
able"; we can count on Him to meet
all our needs)
• 7-Up (Because we put our sukkah
up, then hang decorations up)
• Caramel flavoring (like Mount
Carmel)

During these High Holidays, Jews across America are
pledging to visit Israel in the next twelve months. Be
sure to be counted among the hundreds of thousands
of Americans demonstrating their love and support
for Israel by declaring "I Care. And I'm Going."
In 2003, 1.2 million tourists are expected to visit
Israel. And as your thoughts turn to the new year,
make a commitment now to come to Israel.

Over 1000 synagogues are participating in the
pledge campaign. Is yours?

and pledge details.

#11) It's In The Cards: Collect all
your greeting cards from Rosh
Hashanah and laminate them to dec-
orate the sukkah. You can staple
them to the walls, or use a hole
punch and hang with yarn from the
top.

#12) That's A Wrap: Older chil-
dren can make holiday napkins
with a pretty leaf theme. Just find
leaves in very good shape, then use
a paintbrush to paint color on the
leaf (it's best to paint the under-
side, which will show more of the
veins and details).
Next, preferably using a rubber
brayer or roller (though you can
just use your hand), press the
painted leaf design onto a paper
napkin. This project can be as sim-
ple as that (watercolors will work
just fine).
Or, you can buy nice paints, and
white cloth napkins, for something
more extensive.
More uses for leaf prints: table-
cloths, place cards, or on tissue
paper to wrap a gift of cookies for a
friend. ❑
