Federation-Foundation annual meeting recaps a challenging year.

I

n a year marked by challenges both at home and in Israel, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and its financial arm, the United
Jewish Foundation, held their annual meeting at Congregation Beth
Shalom on Sept. 30.
A significant piece of business was the passing of the UJF leadership from
Mark Hauser to incoming president Allan Nachman.
"I am here tonight because a long time ago, I made the decision to take
advantage of the opportunity granted to me to do just a tiny bit in these historic
times," said Hauser, who turned 60 this year and recalled such important mile-
stones in his lifetime as the rebirth of the Jewish people in Israel and the rise to
affluence and power of the North American Jewish community. His list also
included Federation and Foundation accomplishments of the past year.
"Mark, I want to express my admiration for your steady and creative leader-

ship over the past three years," said Nachman, an attorney practicing in
Bloomfield Hills. "You've steered the Foundation through sometimes difficult
issues, but all of us have to come to admire your cool head and your ability to
get to the core of any issue being discussed and debated."
A flat 2003 Federation's Annual Campaign and dwindling unrestricted
reserves in Federation's general fund caused allocation cuts ranging from 4-11
percent for Federation constituent agencies.
"In the Jewish communal sense, it was the worst of times; it was the best of
times," said Lawrence Jackier, Federation president. "This community faced
issues relating to our needs and our ability to respond to those needs without
having the financial capacity and capability that we were accustomed to having.
"But because of all of you, and particularly the leadership of our local agen-
cies, our presidents and execs, we did not get into territorial disputes. We all rec-
ognized that this was a problem that this community faced and we would face it
together. And we would get through it together, and we would be strong.
"And that's exactly what occurred."
