This week marked the 30th
anniversary of the Yom Kippur
War, launched as a sneak attack
against Israel by Egypt and Syria.
While Egypt now has a peace treaty
with Israel, and Syria came close to
signing one in the 1990s, both
countries continue in many ways to
work against peace in the region.

Syria hosts terrorist organizations
and training camps — one of
which was bombed by Israel this
week in retaliation for a suicide
bombing in Haifa. Egypt has low-
ered its diplomatic relations — not
posting an ambassador in Israel for
more than three years — rejects
most trade and cooperation efforts
and refuses to recognize Israel's
U.N.-certified withdrawal from
Lebanon.

Giant Dies

Toronto/JTA — Israel "Izzy" Asper,
a Canadian media mogul and pro-
Israel activist, died Oct. 7 in
Winnipeg at age 71.
Asper's empire included Canada's
Global television network and more
than 60 Canadian newspapers and
news outlets worldwide.
Asper was a staunch defender of
Israel and a backer of Canada's
Liberal Party. He also was a strong
supporter of Winnipeg's Canadian
Museum for Human Rights, cur-
rently under construction.
Asper's parents settled in
Manitoba in the 1920s after fleeing
anti-Semitism in what is today
Ukraine.
Asper also was a benefactor of the
Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial
and founded the Asper International
Holocaust Studies Program at Yad
Vashem's International School for
Holocaust Studies.
