New Count Given
Of Russian Jews
Moscow/JTA — There are 259,000
Jews in Russia, according to an unoffi-
cial overview of the 2002 national pop-
ulation census.
The number that appeared in the
Novoye Izvestiya newspaper is close to
some of the lower estimates given by
Russian Jewish demographers and soci-
ologists last year, before the first post-
Soviet census was taken.
Some Jewish leaders are questioning
the validity of the data. The most recent
previous census, conducted in 1989
when the Soviet Union still existed,
counted 551,000 Jews within the bor-
ders of what later became Russia.
The unofficial results published last
week ranked Jews as the 28th-largest
ethnic group in Russia. According to
the results, more than 78 percent of the
Jews live in Moscow or St. Petersburg.
Dean Defends
Israel's Rights
WashingtonlJTA — Democratic presi-
dential candidate Howard Dean defend-
ed Israel's right to attack terrorist camps.
If the camp. Israel struck outside
Damascus last weekend was a terrorist
camp, then the Jewish state had the
right to act as it did, Dean said.
Dean previously has come under fire
for saying the United States should not
tilt toward Israel in its efforts to bring
peace to the Middle East.
Karia Extends
`Olive Branch'
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel rejected calls
from the new Palestinian Authority
prime minister for a truce to save the
road map peace plan.
"Give us a chance to prevent contin-
ued deterioration" of the situation,
Ahmed Karia proposed in an interview
published in the Ma'ariv newspaper in
Israel. "We are ready to fulfill our obli-
gations as outlined by the road map of
condition that Israel fulfills its obliga-
tions as well," he said.
Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom
dismissed the call as a "honey trap" and
demanded that the Palestinians first
crack down on terrorist groups, as called
for in the road map. Karia has said he
will not crack down on terrorists.
