Blockbuster.corn called it "the sum-
mer of Shia."
Hot actor Shia LaBeouf, 17, appeared
in a number of films this past summer,
including the hit Holes and Charlie's
Angels': Full Throttle. LaBeouf also
appears in Project Gree_nlight's The Battle
of Shaker Heights, in which Jewish actress
Shin Appleby, 24, best known as the star
of TV's Roswell, has a supporting role.
LaBeouf has a somewhat exotic back-
ground. His father is a non-Jewish
French Cajun (Louisiana French)
down, and his Jewish mother is an
artist. Shia describes his parents as "hip-
pie types," and explains that money was
especially tight after his parents' divorce.
Shia started doing stand-up comedy
at age 11 in L.A. comedy clubs --- he
somehow managed to get a work per-
mit. His routine
was peppered with
jokes about being
"half-Jewish" and
"half- Cajun."
His big break
came in 2000 when
he was cast in the
hit Disney Channel
Shia LeBeou
series Even Stevens
as "Louis Stevens."
Shia, who celebrated his bar mitzvah,
plays softball for a Chabad-sponsored
L.A. team.
Recently, LaBeouf explained the
rather funny meaning of his name on
the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
"Shia, he explained, means "gift of
God in Hebrew. "Bouef" means
"beef," in French. Therefore, he said his
name means, "Thank God for beef."
In a recent issue of the New York 77mes,
actor Tab Hunter revealed that his
father was Jewish.
Hunter was the '50s epitome of the
"uber-Aryan" blond beach-boy type. His
name, of course, was made up.
The actor had some good roles into,
the mid-'60s, but he was pretty stiff as
an actor. When his looks faded, so did
his career. In the '80s, he announced he
was gay and appeared in campy roles in
a couple of John Waters movies.
Hunter is not "very Jewish." His father
abused his mother, and she left him
when Tab was a small child. Tab never
saw him again and wasn't raised Jewish.
So, what next? Jennifer Lopez
announcing she is the love child of the
wayward son of a Chasidic rebbe? 0y, if
"J-Lo" becomes "Jew-Lo".

the Jewish Theological Seminary's Second Century Award, the Holocaust Legacy
and the Rabbi Jacob Segal Awards. Sylvia has also been active in the Jewish com-
munity and for years has been committed to Jewish causes.
