This year we decided to ask physicians about women's health in general — from heart disease to lung cancer to estrogen therapy. And some of the facts are astounding. For example, heart disease is the number one killer among American women, and lung cancer is on the rise. The one issue I have not addressed, which concerns me, is that sometimes women are not taken seriously. Let me explain. A few years ago, my husband and I attended an out-of-town wedding with several couples from our community. During the cocktail hour, a 50-year-old woman felt faint, had trouble breathing and was rushed to the restroom. Luckily, several of the guests were physicians, and they all attended the woman. They called the ambulance, and she was taken to the hospital. We were all very concerned and worried. "Oh, she's probably having an anxiety attack," said one doctor. I turned to my husband, who is a physician and said, "If a man felt faint and had trouble breathing, would a doctor ever accuse him of hav- ing an anxiety attack?" My husband said "No." Then, we both had a discussion about this topic. To finish the story the woman had pancreatitis, a serious condition, but thankfully she was fine within a few days. Sometimes all the information seems contradictory and hard to decipher, so we produced this issue to hopefully help you, our readers. Associate Editor Linda Bachrack attended the "Red Dress Project," a national exhibit featuring the work of top fashion designers to help increase awareness of heart disease in women at Beaumont's Ministrelli Women's Heart Center. Kudos to philanthropist Florine Ministrelli and physician Pamela Marcovitz, M.D., for their involve- ment. On our event page, we highlight an ORT benefit, a tropical-themed party hosted by Rob and Marcie Orley. Have a Healthy, Happy New Year Sincerely, & M F G 4111 .
