ou don't have to be a Buddy Rich or a Keith Moon or a Tommy Lee
to take center stage as a percussionist at Congregation Beth Shalom.
Just bring yourself and a sense of fun.
Beth Shalom recently began a program called Shabbat Jams, a
musical Kabbalat Shabbat for families with children of all ages.
"Beth Shalom's mission is to be a warm and welcoming, integrated communi-
ty of synagogue, school and family, with shared vision, practices, celebration
and lifelong learning," says the synagogue's president, Nancy Glen. "Shabbat
James reinforces that mission."
The program, where children are invited to play musical instruments and sing
songs to welcome Shabbat, got its start in discussions between Glen and mem-
bers of the Beth Shalom Synagogue 2000 and membership committees.
Shabbat Jams is led by members of the Beth Shalom clergy, along with syna-
gogue members and guests. Following services, the synagogue hosts a Shabbat
dinner.
"This program has been very well received," Glen says, and often attracts not
only children and their parents, but grandparents, aunts and uncles as well. 0
