May the coming year be filled with health and happiness for all our family & friends. L'Shanah Tovah! to my family." Emotional Reunions The Zeitlins and Millers consider themselves fortunate to have welcomed home both their sons in May. "I wouldn't have missed it for the world," Marlene said, recalling her 14-hour drive to Little Rock with children Bryan, 18, and Caryn, 12. "It was my birthday, it was Mother's Day weekend. What better gift could I have asked for, than having my three kids together?" Bryan was thrilled to see the planes fly in formation. Caryn just wanted to get to her brother to hug him. The two raced to reach him first. "When I got to him, I didn't want to let go," Caryn said. "It was worth the 14-hour drive just to do that." They convinced Allen to drive home with them the next day to surprise their father. "My dad was sitting down watching TV — he wasn't even expecting my mom until the next day," Allen said. "When I said, 'Hey, I'm home' — it seemed like his whole body was up in the air at once!" Garry recalled the reunion. "All of a sudden he was just standing there," he said. "It was so exciting to see him. I'm just so proud of him." Michael Miller remembered the excitement of seeing Kyle's ship pull into dock. "It was pouring rain, but when that ship came around the corner, the crowd went crazy. The entire flight deck was ringed by Navy guys in their white uniforms, and these guys are standing at attention. "Kyle had told us he wouldn't be able to get off the ship until 6 p.m. because he had. to wait for the nuclear reactor to shut down," Susan said. "So we thought we'd be waiting several hours, but at just about 2 p.m., my phone rang and it was Kyle saying, 'Mom, where are you?' I said I'm by the bleachers and he told me to look down. And there he was, standing right beside me!" Kyle recalled, "Our eyes met as we were still on the phone. It was just so amazing. I was just so happy to be back." Since that happy day, Kyle was deployed once more, but this time only for two weeks in July. But with the USS Harry S. Truman in dry dock, he's now waiting to hear back about his application to officers school. He's ranked third out of 200 applicants. In Little Rock, Allen has learned he could be deployed again as early as January. "I'm trying not to focus on that," Marlene said bravely. "There's enough worry while he's gone. Do I need to worry prior to his going? But I am aware that time is approaching very quickly. In the meantime, this Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we'll be praying for peace."
