do the best with what you've got."
During the High Holidays, TheBrave is hop-
ing to give Jewish service men and women a lit-
de bit more of a connection to their Jewish
identity and to their families back home. The
group is sponsoring a program, "Phone Home
in Tishrei," that asks congregations, organiza-
tions and individuals to buy and send phone
cards, along with High Holiday notes.
Astor, whose son Ethan, a first lieutenant in
the Marines, has been in Iraq since Jan. 16,
understands the importance of those notes and
phone cards all too well.
"Generally, we have e-mail contact," she said.
"I write every morning and every night regard-
less of when he might receive it, but we've only
been able to speak with him three times since
he's been gone, most recently in July."
Communication is limited for many members

of the military, depending on the area they've
been deployed to and the situation in the region.
But, for many, cost is also an issue. One hundred
phone card minutes equals six minutes of talk time
from Iraq. So a card can make all the difference.
"It's really moving to get a note from a total
stranger," Kyle said. "Just letting service members
know that you care."
Allen agrees.
"The packages, the letters saying our prayers go
out to you. They mean so much," Allen added.
"My sister Caryn's Hebrew school class at B'nai
Moshe sent me drawings and my Aunt Kathi
Rubin's sixth graders sent my entire squadron
Valentines candies and cards. My second-grade
teacher at Maple Elementary in West Bloomfield,
Mrs. Friedman, had her class send me stuff. I just
want to thank them all and everyone at B'nai
Moshe for praying for me and being so supportive
