arbara Schreier and
Judy Schwartz, the
last co-presidents of
Temple Beth Jacob
in Pontiac, which closed in
1991, continue to fulfill their
former congregation's wish to
have their Torahs given to area
youth.
On Sept. 12, the pair repre-
sented the Temple Beth Jacob
Chavurah at a special Shabbat
service and Torah dedication.
A Torah that had belonged to
Beth Jacob and had been given
to the University of Michigan
Hillel now was being passed to
the youth group of Temple
Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor.
Hillel recently dedicated a
new Torah and was able to
pass this one along. Thirteen

former Beth Jacob members
attended the service and all
joined in the procession with
the Torah and surrounded it as
a youth group member read
from it.
Schreier did a Torah blessing
and gave a brief history of
Beth Jacob. Schwartz blessed
the Shabbat candles and did a
Torah blessing.
Rabbi Robert Levy's sermon
spoke about the Torah's place
in Jewish life and how the val-
ues it teaches can be learned by
the youth by having their own
Torah to study.
The Torah cover was special-
ly made for this presentation
and donated by the chavurah,
which now is part of Temple
Beth El in Bloomfield Hills. El
