friendship, though it lasted
only a few months," Levi says.
"We had planned on being
together after the war. Frank
would be playing for the
Tigers, and I would be there
cheering in the stands. Every
now and then, we would
recall with nostalgia our great
adventures in the South
Pacific."

The War Ends
In 1945, Levi was stationed in
the Philippines, having just
returned from battle on
Okinawa. It would be his last
Rosh Hashanah away from
home.
Soon after arriving in the
Philippines, he learned that
Japan had surrendered. He sat
down and wrote his family:

Dear Folks:
Sorry that I for-got about this
earlier. I want to wish you on
this, the day before Rosh
Hashono, a very Happy,
Healthy and Prosperous NEW
YEAR. We can thank God that
at last peace has been restored to
this earth and ask Him for
guidance in making it a long
lasting, just and secure peace.

That afternoon, at around
5:30, the men were taken in
tanks to Cebu City, where
services were held in a huge,
burned-out movie theater.
The roof was desperately in
need of repair, and no one
could sit in the first four rows
because there had been a
flood and the seats were still
under water.
This night, the chaplain
spoke about the difficulties in
Palestine.
British forces were refusing
to admit any but a handful of
the Jewish refugees. The men
were told "to pray that the sit-
uation there would soon
change."
The next day was both
Rosh Hashanah and V-J
(Victory over Japan) day for
the island of Cebu, so there
was much to celebrate. Best of
all, it was only a matter of
months, or maybe even weeks,
until Benno Levi would be
home.
