COMMUNITY'S CALL from page•45
Today, thanks to a new approach,
advice and assistance from board
members, and the hard work of my
staff, Council is now seen by the
news media as the entry point into
the Jewish community. Council is
much more visible on a wide range
of matters affecting the Jewish com-
munity.
Bridging Time
What does the future hold for
Jewish community relations in gen-
eral and for Council in particular?
It's clear that, to a large extent, the
future will be an extension of the
present.
Israel advocacy will remain our
highest priority. However, Council
needs to move into new, important
venues, in order to meet the grow-
ing challenges in this area. Council
is expanding its role in preparing
high school and college students to
promote Israel on campus. We also
need to find more creative ways of
taking advantage of our relation-
ships with non-Jewish community
leaders, so that they are supportive
of Israel.
That relationship building is so
important to Council's success and,
by extension, to our community's
success in accomplishing its goals.
We must, continually reassess the
local landscape, determining the
groups and individuals on the hori-
zon with which we need to get
acquainted, cultivate as allies and
find common cause. Our VIP trips
to Israel, for example, are most suc-
cessful when we identify partici-
pants who are the leaders of tomor-
row.
While Council has made incredi-
ble advances in recent years in its
use of technology, we still have a
long way to go. I envision a time
when we can more effectively com-
municate with members of the
Jewish community, inform them on
the issues of the day, and mobilize
them for action by marshaling the
full capacity of technology in an
integrated fashion.
As I reflect on the past 15 years
and look ahead, I am proud of the
accomplishments of the past and
excited about the challenges of the
future. There's never a dull moment
at Jewish Community Council, and
that's how I like it. ❑
