treat people and make them wait for
hours before letting them pass is
"pure humiliation and inconven-
ience."
Some defend the tight security.
Ilan Troen, a professor at Brandeis
University and Ben-Gurion
University of the Negev, says, "The
checkpoints that impede civilian life
in the West Bank and Gaza are a
necessary evil and viewed as instru-
ments to save Jewish lives rather
than instruments of harassment."
Sometimes, it's the everyday sto-
ries, away from the spin of political
debates and language that remind us
of the human elements on both sides ,
of the Palestinian and Israeli story.
Stockton tells of an Israeli negotia-
tor at Oslo named Uri Savir, who
wrote in his book, The Process, about
his initial difficulty discussing any
agreement with a Palestinian. Savir
writes how he inherited his father's
image of Palestinians as the enemy,
yet he was committed to working
out a settlement. Only later did
Savir and his Palestinian counterpart
begin to trust each other.
The men realized they both had
teenage daughters who were about
the same age. After signing the Oslo
accords, each man dedicated his per-
sonal copy of the agreement to his
daughter. Several years later, Maya
Savir got married and Mona Karia,
the daughter of the Palestinian nego
tiator was an honored guest. That
negotiator was the current
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed
Karia.
Ultimately, each side wants the
same thing — to live on his own
land and have the dignity of his
faith, says Stockton. "It's in the Bible
that each will have his vine and fig
tree."
The Biblical reference, Micah Ch.
4, states:
And He shall judge between many
peoples, and shall decide concerning
mighty nations afar off,' and they shall
beat their swords into plowshares, and
their spears into prunninghooks:
nation shall not lift up sword against
nation, neither shall they learn war
any more But they shall sit every man
under his vine and under his fig-tree;
and none shall make them afraid; for
the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath
spoken. ❑
