Q11 • 1 M — lc. e,* co A Mission For All Organizers seek to recruit young adults for 10-day Israel trip. HARRY KIRSBAUM StaffWriter T he Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's lead- ers are pleased that 595 par- . ticipants have already signed up to go to Israel on Federation's Michigan Miracle Mission 4 on April 18-28, 2004. With a goal of 800 participants, mis- sion director Sally Krugel said Federation is "working very hard to at least educate as many people as we can so it will be in their thoughts and minds that this is pos- sibly something that they want to do." With an average age of participants in the mid-50s, Krugel said that organ- izers are seeking others of all ages at least 18, but they understand the reali- ties of the times, and they hope for a last-minute rush. "Young people's lives are so busy, they don't make decisions until they have to," she said. "We're not discour- aged. We certainly think that there will be a very nice participation from As well as the trip's length, the $2,895 price tag is also a factor, he said. "Single's missions are a week and they're heavily subsidized." So far, about 40 younger participants have signed up for the trip, nearly 7 per- cent, but "it wouldn't shock me if we get a spike at the end of the year," he said. "It'd be nice if 10 percent of the 800 could be young people." Kaufman said two other private meet- ings have been held in people's homes to recruit young people, with a selling point of little missions within a bigger mission. `About 80 percent of the time, you're ThijALE CARNEqge Increase confidence & persuasive ability. Scott Kaufman, immediate past presi- dent of Federation's Young Adult Division, acknowledged the challenges. "Ten days is a long time to leave little kids with grandparents," said Kaufman, a frequent speaker at Miracle Mission recruitment meetings along with mission co-chairs Peter Alter and Dr. Richard Krugel. "There's also single people who would rather, to be honest, go on the national single's mission," Kaufman said. "Despite those hurdles, we do have some people very committed to go." not going to be going with 800 people," he said. "The two young adult buses will be doing something on their own except for the mega-events." Kaufman said the targeted meetings got about half the people to at least think about going. "Once you hear people talking, there's a kind of group dynamics," he said. "Having a separate meeting is good, and we'll see it pay off." ❑ For more information, call Miracle Mission director Sally Krugel, (248) 203-1485. Enjoy 20% savings on all pampering spa services.
