More than 1,000 walkers participat- ed in the 10th annual Gilda's Club Family Walk on Sept. 13. The walk benefits the club started by eight founding members who believed strongly in the late comedienne Gilda Radner's dream of providing a supportive place available to all touched by cancer. The walk has become an impor- tant fund-raising element of the organization, raising money that helped establish a house in Royal Oak, which recently added a 3,500- square-foot addition, which more than doubles the existing space. The eight founding members are Marcia Gershenson of Birmingham, Jacqueline Grekin of Farmington Hills, Sherry Medsker of Franklin, Maureen Martinez of Bloomfield Hills; and Bernice Gadon, Ina Kadish, Geri Lester and Carol Silverman, who are now deceased. Each of the founders learned that cancer affects the entire family as well as the person with cancer and the advantages of being around oth- ers who truly understand what can- Diagnosed with hepatitis during a health exam 10 years ago, Jeff Feldman fought hard before suc- cumbing to liver failure last year. A Farmington Hills resident, father of four children and a Congregation Shaarey Zedek mem- ber, he underwent two liver trans- plants, but tried to raise awareness of the disease and to raise money to help find a cure, said his wife, Julie. Last year, when he discovered the "Liver Walk," a 6K family walk in Lower Huron Metropark in Belleville, he made it his mission to get people to participate, said Julie. "We put together 'Team Felds,' made T-shirts and gathered as many friends and family as we could," she said. Jeff made a decision to partici- pate, arid walked half the course.
