The Jewish inmates on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur used to enjoy a full service of prayer ... with par- ticipation invited for blowing the shofar, Torah blessings, etc. There is no Jewish rabbinical chaplain today ... at either SMCF with about four Jewish inmates ... or the Parnall Correctional Facility, the former trustee section, with around 25 or so Jewish inmates. And it is strangely unclear as to whether or not either Jackson prison will hold services for Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. WOULDN'T IT BE great if ... some- one thought of leasing some nearby property for the High Holidays ... and was able to put up a portable multilevel parking structure of some kind? ... If ... synagogues or private entrepreneurs devised an appropriate public pickup and delivery service for the High Holidays? WHAT A SHAME that so many young people nowadays select their syna- gogue for the High Holidays by the amount of available parking. AT HIGH HOLIDAY time, wrote the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles in 1997, no term seems more apt than "wandering Jew" In the old days, you simply went wherever your parents or friends brought you. So what are Jews looking for in a High Holiday service? Inspiration, relevance, child care, and good parking — though not necessarily in that order. What they don't want is too much Hebrew, dull ser- mons, expensive tickets and a stuffy or snobby atmosphere. Traditional synagogues that have choirs, long sermons and an almost the- atrical approach to the solemn liturgy clash with a young generation's demand for a more participatory approach. KIDDIE KORNER ... After Rosh Hashanah services, a little boy told the rabbi, "When I grow up, I'm going to give you some money" "Well, thank you," the rabbi replied, "but why?" "Because my daddy says you're the poorest rabbi we've ever had." KORN KORNER ... Godieb sees his rabbi and says, Rabbi, I know tonight is Kol Nidre night, but tonight the New York Yankees start the playoffs. Rabbi, I'm a lifelong Yankees fan. I've got to watch the game on TV" The rabbi says, "Godieb, that's what video recorders are for." Godieb is surprised. "You mean I can tape Kol Nidre?" ❑ YOUR TRADITIONAL "EVE" OF YOM KIPPUR MENU FROM BLOOMS CATERING FREE 1444, Matie/A9444x Apple Strudel or 7•Layer Cake ghtegeteMtom, with any Break-the-Fast Tray V.644, 'gout FortiwA, ' DAIRY SALAD TRAY Nova Lox, Whitefish Salad, Tuna Salad, Egg Salad, Cottage Cheese, Swiss and American Cheeses, Cream Cheese Balls, Tomatoes, Onions, Cucumbers, Scallions, Olives, Fresh.
