Apples And Honey
For GIs In Iraq

New York/JTA — American Jewish
soldiers in Iraq are getting a shipment
of Torahs., gefilte fish, and apples and
honey for Rosh Hashanah.
The shipment is being sent by vol-
unteers, rabbis, politicians and mili-
tary personnel to Jewish GIs in Iraq
and Kuwait. The Jewish Educators
Network, which is coordinating
"Operation Apples and Honey," got
four synagogues in New York to lend
Torah scrolls for the cause. Col. Jacob
Goldstein, state staff chaplain of the
New York Army National Guard, will
deliver the Torahs.
The shipment also includes 1,200
kosher dinners and 800 kosher lunch-

Reform Prayer
Book In Russian

Moscow/JTA — For the first time, the
Reform movement published its High
Holiday prayer book in Russian.
The machzor is believed to be the
first Russian language, Reform-style
High Holiday prayer book, and it is
intended for dozens of congregations
across the former Soviet Union.
Called Intentions of the Heart, the
book contains parallel Russian and
Hebrew texts, accompanied by exten-
sive Russian-language commentaries
and transliteration.
The book's release was timed to
coincide with the annual meeting last
week in Moscow of Reform commu-
nity leaders from across the former
Soviet Union.
Conference participants called on
the Reform movement's international
leadership to increase its presence in
Russia, where the movement has a
paucity of synagogues and other reli-
gious and educational facilities.

French Holocaust
Victims Identified

Paris/JTA — A German researcher
discovered the identities of 86 Jews
killed by Nazis at a German concen-
tration camp in eastern France.
In the summer of 1943, Nazis per-
formed medical experiments on Jewish
victims at the Struthof camp in

Alsace, an area occupied and annexed
by the German army.
The disclosure follows five years of
research by German historian and
journalist Hans Joachim Lang.

Berlusconi: Sorry
About N ussolini

Rome/JTA — The Italian prime min-
ister apologized to Jewish leaders for
recent remarks about Mussolini and
said he supports Israel.
Silvio Berlusconi met with Jewish
leaders in Rome's main synagogue to
apologize for saying that Italy's former
fascist dictator Benito Mussolini
"never killed anyone." He made the
remarks in a recent magazine inter-
view.
Jewish leaders said Berlusconi
should apologize not only to Jews, but
to all Italians. Nevertheless, they
praised Berlusconi's stand on Israel
and said they were satisfied after the
prime minister's office released a state-
ment condemning all forms of totali-
tarianism, including fascism.
Berlusconi will be in New York next
week to receive the Distinguished
Statesman Award of the Anti-
Defamation League, which will pres-
ent him with the honor at a "Salute to
Italy" dinner.
"Italy stands as a staunch and valued
ally of the United States in the war
against terrorism and has taken a lead-
ership role in an effort to stamp out
anti-Semitism and racism in Europe,"
an ADL statement said.
